Remakes to Look Out For in 2018
If you thought Hollywood had exhausted every possible reboot, prequel, sequel and remake in 2017, don’t hold your breath- 2018 isn’t much different. One can’t deny the nostalgic appeal that remakes offer audiences today. With moviegoers more than happy to take a walk down memory lane, remakes are often amongst the best performing movies of the year. Studios love to bank on established properties that audiences are well familiar with, little wonder the Hollywood remake machine remains as busy as ever.
Not every remake receives critical praise, however. While some successfully reimagine and adapt the stories of beloved classics, others fail so miserably they fade away unnoticed. Will the remakes billed for release this year do their originals justice? You be the judge. If you’re interested to see which remakes are being released in 2018, we’ve compiled a list for you below.
Mulan
Off the back of the hugely successful remake of Beauty and the Beast, Disney presents the live-action retelling of Mulan, the 1998 animated classic. Exactly 20 years later, the story of a young woman pretending to be a man so that she can fight as a warrior in her father’s place in the army, has been reimagined as a live-action movie, and like the best NBA bets it never gets old. Mulan is due to be released on 2 November 2018 and is directed by Niki Caro, alongside her all-female team of screenwriters.
Tomb Raider
Back in 2001, Angelina Jolie stared as the iconic Lara Croft in the original Tomb Raider, based on the popular video game, that like Clash of the Clans remains a firm favourite to this day. In the latest reboot that is set to be released on 16 March, Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander takes up the role as the young archaeologist, Lara Croft. The story follows her exploration of an island off the Japanese coast where her father mysteriously disappeared years earlier. The film is directed by the talented Roar Uthaug of The Wave acclaim, giving die-hard fans of the video game franchise some hope for a worthwhile cinematic reboot.
Scarface
This iconic gangster saga is best known for its 1983 version staring Al Pacino that is based on Armitage Trail’s 1929 novel. Diego Luna stars as the lead in the third remake, which is expected to be released during the second half of this year. The latest version of the story centres on a Mexican immigrant (played by Diego Luna) who makes a name for himself as he slowly rises up the ranks in the criminal underworld in modern day Los Angeles.
A Star Is Born
Boasting an all-star cast, starring Stefani Germanotta (better known as Lady Gaga), Bradley Cooper and Dave Chappelle, the modern remake of A Star Is Born will hit the silver screen on 28 September 2018. First produced in 1937, this will be the fourth version of the musical romantic drama.
