‘The Sopranos’ Will Return Via A New Prequel Movie

The Sopranos are coming back to screens via a new prequel movie over at New Line Cinema. The news comes from Deadline who say that David Chase is behind the planned project, which is being called The Many Saints of Newark, which will be set in the 1960s.

The film will be set in the era of the Newark riots – a time when the African-Americans and the Italians of Newark were at each other’s throats, and amongst the gangsters of each group, those conflicts became especially lethal.

Chase and Lawrence Konner, both of whom were behind the classic HBO TV series, wrote the screenplay for the piece.

The original series, which was led by the late, great James Gandolfini, ran for six seasons from 1999 – 2007.

The trade blog says that some of the beloved characters from the series will appear in the new film, but they haven’t said which. They do indicate that the era could see early explots if Tony Soprano’s father, Giovanni “Johnny Boy,” the former captain of the Soprano crew (Joseph Siravo), and a younger version of his wife Livia (Nancy Marchand), and Tony’s uncle Junior, played by Dominic Chianese.

“David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit, and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film, ”Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman  Toby Emmerich said.

More news as we get it.
