It has been a few years since we’ve seen anything from filmmaker Steve McQueen. The director of the superb Shame and 12 Years A Slave has a new film out in 2018, the intriguingly titled Widows, which opens in the middle of awards season.
The film is a modern-day thriller set against the backdrop of crime, passion and corruption from Steve McQueen and co-writer and bestselling author of Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn.
The film stars Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Garret Dillahunt, Carrie Coon, Jacki Weaver, Jon Bernthal, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo with Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Widows” is the story of four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities. Set in contemporary Chicago, amid a time of turmoil, tensions build when Veronica (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), Alice (Elizabeth Debicki), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) and Belle (Cynthia Erivo) take their fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms. “Widows” also stars Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Daniel Kaluuya, Lukas Haas and Brian Tyree Henry.
Widows is set to open on November 16th 2018 Stateside, and slightly earlier in the Uk on November 9th. Expect this to feature heavily at the fall film festivals like Venice and TIFF (and possibly even London).
