The first on the list is the 2001 classic, 21, which was a hit at the box office having grossed $157.9 million from a budget of $35 million. The plot covers a geeky MIT Maths major (Ben Campbell) who has been accepted into Harvard Medical School but cannot afford the $300,000 fee. Therefore he must go for the prestigious Robinson Scholarship that would cover the entire cost.
Ben is told he needs to dazzle in order to achieve this and goes on to travel to Vegas over weekends with his professor and others at his current school. He would go on to win more than enough and lose it. This film is a must watch for casino fans.
Ocean’s Eleven
The $450.7 million blockbuster from back in 2001 was a huge hit with fans and was the fifth highest grossing of the year. The movie focuses on a select team including Danny Ocean who had just been released from prison, as they plot a way to robbing three of the biggest casinos in Las Vegas. These being the Bellagio, Mirage and MGM Grand casinos.
The movie had a budget of $85 million and was directed by Steven Soderbergh. Due to its popularity it led to two sequels and a spin off which were also all big hits. All the Ocean films are a must see.
Casino Royale
What would a casino list be without a bond movie? The 2006 picture was the first to feature Daniel Craig as 007 in which he is assigned to bankrupt terrorist financier Le Chiffre in a high-stakes poker game. This action movie keeps you at the edge of your seat and was another to do very well at the box office. From a budget of $150 million it grossed $600 million.
This was yet another Bond classic and a must watch. Until Skyfall in 2012 it sat as the highest-grossing James Bond film in history.
Casino
The final film is the best of them all in the 1995 American crime hit, Casino. Directed by Martin Scorsese. The film market the eighth collaboration between Scorsese and legend Robert De Niro. This is following the classics Mean Streets (1973); Taxi Driver (1976); New York, New York (1977); Raging Bull (1980); The King of Comedy (1982); Goodfellas (1990); and Cape Fear (1991).
The Golden Globe winning Casino focused on a mob connected boss in Las Vegas called Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein. It was based on a true story that is shown in the famous novel, Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas. This is a must see true all time classic.
