The 2019 Golden Globes took place in Beverly Hills last night and there was, as always, many highlights and surprises from the first big awards ceremony of the new year. Perhaps the biggest shock was Bohemian Rhapsody taking away the best film (drama) gong, beating the likes of the applauded If Beale Street Could Talk, BlackKklansman and Black Panther. The film’s lead actor Rami Malek was also awarded the best actor (drama) award for his near-flawless portrayal of the late Freddie Mercury, frontman for legendary rock outfit Queen.
Other big winners on the night included Netflix’s Roma, which deservedly took away best foreign language film and best director for Alfonso Cuarón. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was awarded best animated feature film, while Green Book, the comedy-drama with Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen scored best film (comedy/ musical). Ali also walked away with the best supporting actor award for the same film.
In the other acting awards, Olivia Colman won best actress (comedy/ musical) for her role in Yorgos Thantimos’ The Favourite, while Glenn Close deservedly won best actress (drama) for her stunning turn in The Wife.
Christian Bale scored the best actor (comedy/ musical) for his work in the incoming Vice.
