Are you seeking inspiration for your next adventure? Films are a fantastic source of inspiration for adding destinations to add to your travel bucket list, who can deny that all of those mid-80s rom-coms didn’t make you want to pack a bag and jet off to NYC or Seattle in search of true love. Or perhaps Lord of the Rings had you dreaming of life in the Shire? Let’s take a look at some of the best film locations from around the world, you might spot one or two of your favourites…
Beverly Hills, Pretty Woman
An iconic 90s film that never gets dull, Pretty Woman sees prostitute Julia Roberts and suave businessmen Richard Gere embark on an unexpected relationship with an unusually happy ending. This film might make you want to grab your suitcase, your credit cards and head off to Los Angeles for the ultimate shopping trip. If not it might just be a big mistake, big, HUGE.
Ko Phi Phi Leh, The Beach
Remember this one? Featuring 90s heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio backpacking his way to Thailand with a big adventure in mind. Things then get a little strange, but it goes without saying that the location for this film can only be described as pure paradise. Think white sandy beaches, clear blue waters and not a cloud in the sky. It became one of the world’s most famous beaches but, unfortunately, mass tourism has resulted in the temporary closure of Ko Pho Phi Leh. You can still enjoy a similar paradise in nearby Loh Dalum Bay, however.
Skiathos, Mamma Mia!
Just one watch of Mamma Mia! is bound to make you want to jump on a plane to Skiathos faster than you can say Pierce Brosnan. Enjoy beautiful beaches, walks along the harbour and a wide choice of restaurants and bars. This lush island is bursting with natural beauty and there’s plenty to keep you occupied, whether that be with boat trips, snorkelling, shopping or enjoying a taste of the vibrant nightlife. Why not compare hotels online and book yourself a week of pure relaxation and fun?
Matamata, Lord of the Rings
J.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy is based on this picturesque rural village on New Zealand’s north island. This is a must-see for all Lord of the Rings fans, and you can even take a guided tour to fully immerse yourself into the Shire. Swing by Bilbo Baggin’s house, take endless photos of the 44 unique hobbit holes and listen to a fascinating commentary about how the film was created. It may be a small town but there’s plenty to do, and the natural surroundings themselves are simply breathtaking. Why did Frodo ever want to leave?
Oxford, Harry Potter
Oxford is a charming city in central south England and is world famous for its prestigious University. During the filming of the infamous Harry Potter series, Oxford’s Christ Church College and Cathedral provided a backdrop for a handful of scenes. The Bodleian Library and New College Cloisters also feature, so if you’re looking to immerse yourself into the world of witchcraft and wizardry head to beautiful Oxford! Whilst you’re visiting, punting is an essential and don’t forget to visit one of the many museums too.
