‘Shazam!’ Is Reportedly Getting A Sequel

Warner Bros./YouTube

After opening in cinemas in pretty much every territory this past weekend, the rumours are already rife that Warner Bros. is moving ahead with sequel plans. There are various reports online but TheWrap is stating that Henry Gayden, who penned the screenplay for the first movie, is returning to write the follow-up.

Also coming along for a sequel ride are David F. Sandberg and Peter Safran, according to the same report.

Shazam! scored fairly positive reviews upon its release on 5th April, and is currently placed as the number one movie in the world. Its opening weekend Stateside saw it take an impress $59.8 million in receipts, with a total gross of $162 million from around the world (including domestic).

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

The film had a reported budget of $100 million, so a profit is assured for the flick – another solid turn for Warner Bros. and its DC Extended Universe following the massive releases of Wonder Woman back in 2017, and last December’s Aquaman – a film which bowed on the home formats this very week.

No further news on ‘Shazam! 2’ or whatever they decide to call it, but we’re assuming that it is at least a couple of years off from playing in cinemas, or even going before the cameras.

We’ll keep you posted of further news as it comes our way. Here’s the trailer for the first movie in cast you haven’t seen it.
