Instagram and its users are growing at an absolute rate of knots. Since being launched on iOS in 2010, and then on Android in 2012, ‘Insta’ has grown to amass a whopping billion users worldwide. The photo sharing platform is host to public figures in the world of sport, television and, of course, film, the network an important tool in terms of marketing in today’s ever-changing world. Most of your favourite actors will be on there, but who should you be following? Here, we look at some of the big players, and most-active on the social platform in 2019, and who you need in your social feeds.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
There’s nobody in Hollywood working as hard as Dwayne Johnson, and there’s nobody as passionate about his fans either (IMHO). Johnson moves from project to project and keeps every single one of his 140 million followers up to date on his social platforms. With films like Disney’s Jungle Cruise and Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw in the can, and a sequel to Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle in-production, Johnson has a very busy year, and his Insta account proves just that. His work schedule is in addition to his rigorous workout regimes, side-projects including products, involvement in producing other projects he’s now in (like recent superhero movie Shazam!), and his many honourable charity endeavours, coverage of which shows up on his very popular feed daily. Frankly, we’re as addicted to his channel as much as he seems to be dedicated in keeping his followers happy. We love Dwayne.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

They are married in real-life and two of the most adorable people to follow on Instagram too. Lively was recently seen in the brilliant Paul Feig-directed drama A Simple Favour opposite Anna Kendrick while Reynolds was in big-budget sequel Deadpool 2. His next project is the Pokemon: Detective Pikachu movie while Lively is in an upcoming film titled The Rhythm Section opposite Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown. They both have a very endearing habit of trolling one another (lovingly) on both Instagram and Twitter, as well as sharing some behind the scenes images from the projects on which they are working on. Frankly, we love them as we’re sure you will too.
Idris Elba
Idris Elba is probably the most exciting British actor working in Hollywood today. From earlier roles in the likes of The Wire to the upcoming Hobbs and Shaw (alongside Dwayne Johnson), Elba’s star has hugely risen, as has his social following too (his Instagram stats currently sit at 3.9 million followers and climbing). His talents aren’t restricted to the big-screen either; there are TV projects too, including the phenomenal title character in the BBC’s Luther, which has just aired its fifth season, his DJing career as Big ‘Dris, and now a music career too – his latest single ‘Boastie’ sees him perform opposite the likes of Wiley and Sean Paul. You can also add on to that directing – he released his first feature Yardie in 2018, and has a new project based on the story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame in the works as well. His Instagram is full of photo shoots as well lots of cool stuff based around his professional projects too. Make sure you hit it up, folks.
Maisie Williams
With the final season of Game Of Thrones in full flight, Maisie Williams’ star is shining bright. Of course, there are other roles in the likes of the recently released Mary Shelley, the Netflix movie iBoy, and a voice role in Aardman Animation’s brilliant Early Man – we love her in everything, to be honest. Her social following is naturally huge, a massive 9.5 million people constantly following her every movie on Instagram. Over there you’ll find posting on cover shoots, red carpet snaps and awesome images of the young actor touring the world to promote her films and other projects. Williams is still just 20 years old and there is clearly a long road ahead of her, so expect her star-power and accomplishments, of which there are already many, to rise further and further in the years to come.
Will Smith
It is hard to think that it is nearly thirty years since Will Smith exploded onto our TV screens in The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. He’s as big as star in Hollywood now as he was then, each project different from the last and pretty much every genre covered during his three-decade long acting and producing career. He’s played real-life boxers (his turn as Muhammed Ali scored him an Oscar nomination in 2002), down on his luck fathers (The Pursuit of Happyness would bag him another awards nod four years later in 2006), and even blue genies (Smith plays the role made famous by Robin Williams in Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin – coming to screens in May), but what keeps fans interested in the man is his likability factor – and his social channels reinforce that special Mr. NiceGuy image. I’ve never met Smith, but watch him in pretty much anything he’s in. As well as Aladdin, there’s a new Bad Boys film due in 2020, and a double role before that in Ang Lee’s Gemini Man, which will be released through Paramount Pictures in late 2019. So much to look forward to.
So, those are just five of the Instagram accounts to follow, all of which are constantly updated. The five most-followed Hollywood players on the socials are as follows: Selena Gomez (149M), Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (140M), Beyoncé (127M), Jennifer Lopez (92M) and Kevin Hart (73M). If only we had. There are other key accounts to follow to prime your own account. Buzzoid is good for adding followers, while Adobe’s Lightroom and Photoshop are good for tips on priming your photos prior to posting. Then there’s the main Instagram account itself – which has the most followers on the social network – a massive 298 million. I suggest you join them as they too feature the trending hashtags to get involved with.
Whatever happens with social media in the future, Instagram will continue to be one of the biggest players in terms of marketing due to its versatility, ease of use, and the unique way in which it gets us closer to our heroes.
