Top Female Duos In Film and TV

When professional con artist Josephine is impressed by Penny’s small-time con skills, she takes Penny under her wing and attempts to train her to become a skilled pro. Hilarity ensues as Penny fails to live up to Josephine’s classy and crafty standards.

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson utilise their expansive comedic experience to deliver a hilarious story of two very different women coming together to shake up the system. To celebrate The Hustle’s release on May 10th, we’re taking a look at some of the best female duos in film and TV.

Thelma and Louise – Thelma and Louise

Perhaps the most iconic female duo of all time, Thelma and Louise stars Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as the films follows the two best friends in their journey on the run from the police. Whilst on a weekend holiday together, Thelma and Louise are provoked to shoot and kill an attempted rapist, kickstarting a dramatic tale of two best friends seemingly pitted against the world. An emotional, compelling and inspiring tale featuring two of the most iconic female characters in fiction, Thelma and Louise is a must watch and features one of the best endings in film.

Annie and Lillian – Bridesmaids

Starring in the hit 2011 comedy Bridesmaids, comedy duo Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph accurately portray two best friends, Annie Walker and Lillian Donovan, who’ve known each other for years through various ups and downs. Portraying the stress and difficulties of introducing friends from different parts of your life, Bridesmaids is hilariously ridiculous whilst also maintaining a strong sense of relatability, and features one of the funniest and best female duos in comedy.

Poussey and Taystee – Orange is the New Black

Orange is the New Black is a hit show, and for good reason. The series is full of incredible performances from a tremendous cast, and yet Samira Wiley and Danielle Brooks stand out with their performances as Poussey Washington and Tasha ‘Taystee’ Jefferson. Originating from different backgrounds but both forced into crime, Poussey and Taystee form a strong bond and provide a bright spot in Litchfield Penitentiary, an otherwise fairly dismal place.

Monica and Rachel – Friends

One of the most famous TV series of all time, Friends follows the hilarious everyday lives of 6 best friends living in New York. Among these six friends are Monica (Courtney Cox) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), who provide us with some of the most accurate and hysterical portrayals of friendship in the show. Running for 10 seasons across 10 years, Monica and Rachel’s friendship is repeatedly pushed to the brink as they face various issues and dramas in their lives. Due to the longevity of the show, Monica and Rachel are one of the most well developed friendships in TV.

Minny and Aibileen – The Help

In the critically acclaimed The Help, Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis tremendously portray Minny Jackson and Aibileen Clark, two black maids in 1960’s Mississippi. The pair support each other throughout the film as they face daily discrimination and immense hardships, eventually culminating in an emotionally powerful ending. Minny and Aibileen are one of the strongest and well-acted female duos of all time.

Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins – Parks and Recreation

When Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), an eccentric government worker, meets Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones), a good-willed and easygoing nurse, they quickly become best friends. Over the course of 7 seasons the pair develop a colossal love for each other as Ann eventually reciprocates Leslie’s rather forceful approach to friendship. Leslie and Ann are also consistently the stars of laugh-out-loud moments, particularly in Leslie’s constant showering of Ann with weird and wacky compliments.

The Hustle is in cinemas from 10th May 2019.
