Winners Of The 72nd Cannes Film Festival Competition Announced

Well, it’s over. After 12 days of cinematic bliss, the winners of the official competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival have been dished out on the Croisette in the South Of France. The big winner on the night was Bong Joon-Ho’s superb black comedy/ drama Parasite, which took the prestigious Palme d’Or, the best in show at the annual festival. The Jury prize was awarded to two entries; Ladj Ly’s Les Miserables, and Kleber Mendonca Filho’s Bacarau.

Antonio Banderas was awarded best actor for Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, while best actress went to British actress Emily Beecham for Little Joe.

Elsewhere, best screenplay went to Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, while director went to Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne for Young Ahmed.

The Grand Prix – the runner-up, if you will, went to Mati Diop’s highly regarded Atlantique.

Jury Prize (joint): Les Misérables, directed by Ladj Ly and Bacurau, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, Juliano Dornelles

Best Actress: Emily Beecham for Little Joe

Best Actor: Antonio Banderas for Pain & Glory

Best Director: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne for The Young Ahmed

Best Screenplay: Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma

Special Mention of the Jury: It Must Be Heaven, Elia Suleiman

Camera d’Or: Our Mothers, César Díaz

Short Film Palme d’Or: The Distance Between Us And The Sky, Vasilis Kekatos

Special Mention of the Jury: Monstruo Dios, Agustina San

Queer Palm (Feature): Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma

Queer Palm (Short): The Distance Between Us And The Sky, Vasilis Kekatos
