This weekend sees the first major awards ceremony of the year take place. The Golden Globes will honour the best of both TV and film. Ricky Gervais will host the ceremony for the fifth time with the event taking place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
In the main awards, the best picture category is split into two, unlike the Oscars, which take place later in the year. There is the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Motion Picture – Drama.
The likes of Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, the Eddie Murphy starring Dolemite Is My Name, Rian Johnson’s whodunnit Knives Out, the Elton John biopic Rocketman and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood all compete in the ‘musical or comedy’ category with Tarantino’s epic Cannes opener the hot fave to win.
Since its original announcement, The Irishman was pegged as a potential award-season darling. Here we are almost a year later and although the film is a fave to win its Best Picture award as expected, Martin Scorsese’s crime drama is up against some stiff competition in the ‘drama’ category. Todd Phillips’ highly regarded Joker is also in that category, as too are the hotly-tipped Marriage Story and The Two Popes, both Netflix releases, as well as 1917, the WWI movie directed by Sam Mendes that plays out in just one take.
Joker is very well backed, but we’re thinking that The Irishman will still trump the comic book movie that has now grossed well over $1 billion. It’s star, however, is very much the face to take away the leading actor award. Joaquin Phoenix is up against Adam Driver, for Marriage Story, Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory, Jonathan Pryce for The Two Popes, and Christian Bale for Ford Vs Ferrari/ Le Mans ’66.
Renee Zellweger looks like she will walk away with the leading actress gong for her work in the Judy Garland film Judy, but she will have to see off Charlize Theron for her role in true story Bombshell, Scarlett Johansson for Marriage Story, Saoirse Ronan for Little Women and Cynthia Erivo for Harriet.
Awkwafina is the fave for the musical or comedy actress gong for The Farewell, while Eddie Murphy is the hot tip in the male musical/comedy acting category for Dolemite Is My Name, one of our absolute faves of the year.
We’re looking at each and every category as we lead up to Sunday night, so keep it THN for more insight into the 77th Golden Globes right here on the site.
