I missed this at the tail end of last week as the news dropped just as we were shutting down but Netflix has revealed a massive list of 21 new original movies bound for the streaming service and, no doubt, select cinemas for a short time, fo some of them at least.
Netflix
The titles were revealed via a massive Twitter thread and announced brand new movies from the likes of David Fincher, Ron Howard, Ben Wheatley, Spike Lee, and Tyler Perry, who has one of the first films to drop on 17th January.
Fincher has one of the most intriguing titles, the true story Mank, which revolves around the writing of one of the greatest movies of all time, Citizen Kane. Gary Oldman, Lily Collins, Charles Dance and Amanda Seyfried are amongst the impressive cast.
Ron Howard is behind Hillbilly Elegy, a feature starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close – an adaptation of the J.D. Vance memoir of the same name.
Spike Lee’s new ‘joint’ is titled Da 5 Bloods and follows four African American vets who return to Vietnam ‘searching for the remains of their fellow squad leader and the promise of buried treasure’. Chadwick Boseman heads up a cast that also includes Paul Walter Hauser, Norm Lewis, Delroy Lindo, and Jonathan Majors.
Ben Wheatley helms Rebecca, an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s novel which was made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940. Lily James and Free Fire alumni Armie Hammer are amongst the cast.
Also on the list is The Boys From The Band from producer Ryan Murphy, comedy Eurovision starring Will Ferrell, and Rachel McAdams, I’m Thinking Of Ending Things from Charlie Kaufman, the Peter Berg-directed Spenser Confidential with frequent collaborator Mark Wahlberg, and Ryan Murphy directs The Prom with Meryl Streep, James Corden, and Nicole Kidman.
There are plenty more on the list but those are the ones that instantly stood out. Hit the Twitter thread above to check out the rest. We presume that the list will be added to as the streamer released no less than 47 original movies last year.
More as it comes in.
