So, the first major awards ceremony of 2020 has come and gone – just last night the winners of the 77th Golden Globe awards were announced. Although Joaquin Phoenix walked away with the best actor (drama) gong for Joker and Renee Zellweger won the best actress (drama) award for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy as expected, there were lots of surprises on the night, mainly in the main Best Motion Picture (Drama) category where the WWI epic 1917 beat off competition from The Irishman to score the top award. Sam Mendes also walked away with the Best Director award, also for 1917.
Taron Egerton won Best Actor (musical or comedy) for his role of Elton John in Rocketman, while Awkwafina won the actress equivalent for her role in The Farewell.
Missing Link was also a surprise winner for the animated feature award, while Parasite won foreign language film, which was pretty much expected.
