In the past, Golden Globes hosts were known to ruffle some feathers here and there, but no-one was as blunt about it as Ricky Gervais, who hosted the ceremony this year. From the moment the comedian got up on stage, it was clear that he was in a fighting mood. He immediately declared: “You’ll be pleased to know this is the last time I’m hosting these awards, so I don’t care anymore. I’m joking”. From that moment on, Gervais didn’t pull any punches as he roasted many of the attending celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio. Throughout his monologue, Gervais made some crude jokes that weren’t received all that well by the audience, which is made clear by some of their reactions throughout his opening speech.
When Michelle Williams got on stage to accept an award for her performance in Fosse/Verdon, she brought the entire room to tears with an emotional speech. She spoke about women’s rights and urged women of all ages – from 18 to 118 – to speak up and vote to make a change. She said: “When it is time to vote, please do so in your own self-interest. It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them.”
One of the award recipients made history this week: Awkwafina, who stars in The Farewell, is the first actress of Asian descent that bagged an award as for a leading role in the film category. For years and years, very few actors from an Asian background were even nominated for an award, and Awkwafina has now joined an exclusive group of actresses including Sandra Oh and Constance Wu.
Another speech that managed to shake the attending celebrities and the general public was delivered by none other than Patricia Arquette. The actress accepted an award for her role in The Act, and she addressed the state of our generation.
