5 films not to miss in cinemas in February

We’re nearly through the first month of 2020 – a new year and a new decade. With January taking care of most of the awards season films, we thought we’d look to the month ahead and what to expect in February. Here are five movies not to miss in cinemas next month.

Parasite

Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at this past year’s Cannes Film Festival, Parasite comes to the screen by celebrated filmmaker Bong Joon Ho. The film has been applauded by many critics in the months since it first premiered and has been honoured at various awards ceremonies in the past few weeks, including at this weekend’s SAG awards where it won the best ensemble cast gong. The film revolves around the unemployed Kim clan and the very wealthy Parks family. Greed, envy and class discrimination are all explored in this unmissable piece of world cinema from one of the masters.

Blumhouse’s Family Island

A loose remake of the 1970s television show, Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island is a genre piece with an impressive cast that includes the likes of Michael Peña, Maggie Q, and Michael Rooker. The story revolves around the mysterious Mr. Rourke (Peña) who makes dreams come true for travelers to his luxury island. Those fantasies soon turn into nightmares and a fight to the death in order to escape the clutches of the tropical paradise. This is perfect date-night fodder as the thriller heads to cinemas just in time of Valentine’s Day weekend on the 14th of February.

True History Of The Kelly Gang

This is one of the true highlights of the year – if only to see the performance of Russell Crowe in one of his best roles for ages. The film is split into a number of sections, each one chronicling the life of the legendary Australian outlaw Ned Kelly. George MacKay, who is currently wowing audiences in the one-shot WWI movie 1917, leads the cast as the older Kelly, supported by the likes of George MacKay, Essie Davis, Nicholas Hoult, Thomasin McKenzie, and Charlie Hunnam. It will arrive in cinemas on 28th February and is an absolute must-see.

Greed

Some of us might have to win the lottery, score at the races or visit a casino online to make our millions, but Sir Richard McCreadie (Steve Coogan) is a self-made billionaire, securing his mountain of wealth on the high street. The film puts up a huge magnifying glass on the super-rich, chronicling the life of McCreadie through some wonderful satire. Featuring a superb comedic performance from Coogan, once again teaming him with filmmaker Michael Winterbottom, and a brilliant supporting cast full of British and international comedy talent, this is one the highlights of the month. It hits cinemas on 21st February.

Portrait Of A Lady On Fire

We feature another world cinema title for our final movie on this list. Portrait Of A Lady On Fire was another big film to come out of Cannes 2019 and stars the superb Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel. Set in Brittany in the eighteenth century, the story centers on a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman. We recently reviewed the film, calling it ‘an elegiac, poetic piece of work that will, if you excuse the pun, set your heart ablaze.’ It will land in cinemas on 28th February.
