Maserati has been in existence for over 100 years and has endured a number of challenges; two world wars, numerous ownership changes, potential liquidation, the 1970s fuel crisis and globalisation of the car market over the last 30 years. This provides the dramatic narrative backdrop to this new documentary. The company was born out of the Maserati brothers’ joint passion for technical excellence in engine building and motor racing which remains a core part of the Maserati brand. It still inspires misty eyed recollections of past glories by all those who feel the passion for this unique car.
Over the years the company has enlisted the prowess of all the Italian coachbuilding companies to wrap their racing chassis with the most exquisite bodywork. The cars were commissioned by their super-rich customers to combine, in some cases, Maserati’s latest F1 engines into the car of their choice. In the film, famous Maseratis, including the 250F, Birdcage, and the A6GCS which are all shown off against the beautiful Italian countryside.
Interviews with many of the racing drivers, designers and owners of Maserati cars and the company itself give a deeper insight into what makes Maserati special. These are the highlight of the documentary overall, as they revealed many of the facts and anecdotes that any true Maserati aficionado will be quoting over their club dinners. It is great to see Sir Stirling Moss talking of his early days competing against Juan Manuel Fangio, while the animation in John Surtees’ face as he relived the excitement of his racing and engineering contributions to the short-lived Cooper Maserati racing team is also a highlight.
The film overall is a chronological account of Maserati cars up to 2014 with the stunning Alfieri concept car. Even if you know Maserati inside out this you are sure to find a few new facts and take away anecdotes from this solid historical account.
