The BBC has released a first-look trailer for Small Axe, a series of five new movies from filmmaker Steve McQueen produced by the BBC. The films in the series are Mangrove, Lovers Rock, Alex Wheatle, Education, and Red, White and Blue. The first three episodes, which kick off with Mangrove, will open the 58th New York Film Festival on September 25, 2020. The films will air on the BBC in the UK and on Amazon Prime Video in the US.
Here’s the story behind Mangrove, the first film in the series.
Fifty years ago, on 9 August 1970, 150 protestors marched against police harassment in Notting Hill. This is the true story of the Mangrove 9, a group of Black activists who were arrested for leading the protest and who changed British history by taking a stand against racial discrimination.
