5 Of The Best: Horror movies to watch this Halloween on Netflix

All of these are available to stream now.

Netflix

Halloween is officially upon us, so with just a couple of days to go until fright night is upon us, we thought we’d take a look at five awesome horror movies to add to your Netflix lists this coming weekend. All of these movies are currently available to watch on Netflix UK and some other territories.

Hereditary

This film was an absolute game-changer when it was released a couple of years ago, and signalled the arrival of a striking new force in the genre in filmmaker Ari Aster. Aster would go on to make the equally haunting Midsommar a year later, but his impressive debut is an absolute slow-building shocker. Toni Collette, Alex Wolff and Gabriel Byrne lead the cast of the film.

The Cabin In The Woods

Who remembers this superb movie from back in 2012? Cabin In The Woods comes to the screen from Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard, and it is quite the directorial debut. Featuring a cast that includes Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, and the superb Richard Jenkins, the film revolves around five friends who take a trip to a cabin – yep, in the woods, for a retreat, only to inflicted with pain from puppet masters in a secret underground facility.

A Quiet Place

While we wait for the sequel, which had its release put on hold back in March due to cinemas closing, why not take a trip back to John Krasinsky’s A Quiet Place. While not as gory as our two previous suggestions, in terms of fear and suspense, you can’t beat this masterclass from the debut director. Set in a world which is dominated by unseen beasts, who will take anyone out if they make a sound, one family must come together to escape the wrath of the blind, but noise sensitive creatures who lurk around every corner.

Halloween (2018)

This awesome sequel to John Carpenter’s ground-breaking horror was unleashed onto audiences back in 2018, seeing Jamie Lee Curtis return to the role of Laurie Strode. Michael Myers returns to wreak havoc on the Strode family, 40 years after his initial attacks in sleepy Haddonfield. Writers David Gordon Green, Jeff Fradley, and Danny McBride have constructed a worthy sequel to the original, and if you haven’t seen it, you should really add this to the top of your lists for Halloween night. More sequels are planned to this as well, with the first, Halloween Kills, already in the can for a release in 2021.

Vampires vs. The Bronx

If you fancy something a little different, and something a little more family friendly, try this 12-rated Netflix original movie, Vampires vs. The Bronx. Oz Rodriguez directs this light horror about three kids from The Bronx who must protect their neigbourhood after it is invaded by vampires. Released at the beginning of October, this is perfect Halloween fodder for families with older children or teenagers, and at a swift 86 minutes in length, can easily be fitted in as the first part of a nail-biting double header with something a little heavier for desert.
