You need to drop your controller and get hold of some popcorn, so as to enjoy the best video games movies.
Video game movies have been there for a very long time, but the thing about the video game movies out there is that it is sometimes a bit difficult for you to find one that won’t leave you embarrassed, or make you curse in the direction of the director, and perhaps wanting to drop it and get straight back to playing video games immediately. But one thing we’ve observed is that Hollywood has actually realized the positive and powerful effects of telling stories from video games the right way, and the list of video game movies below is a proof of that.
In the list, you will encounter some of the best movies out there, especially in the video game genre, ranging from the detective Pikachu that exemplifies comedy in all angles, the emotionally creepy Silent Hill, plus the current edition of Sonic the Hedgehog that looked like it started on the wrong footing, before everything was changed for the best through a huge virtual overhaul, and many others. Whichever one you prefer, check the list and pick.
1. Ratchet and Clank
Despite being launched in 2016, it will seem like the Ratchet and Clank’s maiden movie has been forgotten easily. We agree that the movie is full of casting choices that many may describe as weird and that it made some loss, but once the original story is considered on its own merit, it is an amazing movie.
The humor and charm that products from the PlayStation platform is known for may not be found here, and the animation may not be top of the roof quality, but you won’t regret the 90 minutes you will spend watching this. Though this seems like a backhanded compliment, it is actually not. The Ratchet and Clank family friendly movie is very energetic, and makes a perfect delivery of a robot and a Lombax on the movie together in a very fun way.
2. Silent Hill
You may say that some scenes here seem very archaic, but this does not take away the chills that the movie brings. This came as an exception to the numerous below average video game movies before it. The casting was very decent, and the scares were there too. Though this may not be able to compete with its peers in the movie world, when you consider the fact that it is a video game movie, you realize that it deserves some accolades. The pyramid head character is also a bonus to this movie as against other video game movies, though the sight may have you covering your face sometimes.
3. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
In the ‘Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within,’ you encounter those Hollywood actors that would appear for the sake of the money, a very huge reliance on new technology and a brand new story in a franchise that is well loved. All these combine to make it a movie to watch. When you look at it currently, it may have some air of sterility, but it was a marvel to behold at the time it was released, and the banana’s fantasy plot was the icing.
This movie did the wonder of acknowledging its source deeply and also being futuristic in ways that other video game movies of its time never thought of. The risk taking that was involved here to give it the leap forward should be something of a lesson to all in the industry. It exemplifies everything good about being daring and different.
4. Mortal Kombat
Now, to make our list, not all video game movies must be good. We can make an example with Mortal Kombat here, which simply retells the events of the original game in a cheesy manner with a very heavy action and those lines that still serve as memes up till the quarter of a century after.
But one thing to note is the loyalty of the movie, as it never deviates from the subject of the original source, which is the video game. That is to say that some very disturbing fatalities, excessive rivalries and some larger than life characters were the crux of the movie. This is where you will see the skull of a man cut into two and his skin melt away. But when you are in the mood and under the booze with your friends, nothing will help you kill your 90 minutes effectively than this 1995 movie.
5. Warcraft
Hollywood picked up the world of Warcraft at the ideal time. Being seen in the mold of gigs like Lord of the Rings, the Jewel in the Crown for Blizzard comes full of lore, and when the indie darling, Duncan Jones is directing, what do you expect? This is not just the best video gaming adaptation of all time because of grossing $433m, but it bequeaths the World of Warcraft the pedestal to rest on.
This also has its shortcomings, including over egging the pudding under the heavy weight of its costume, but it still was an outstanding video game movie. It never shied away from taking a chance, and was ready to spend huge on a director who knows his onions, giving him the hand to mesmerize the world.
6. Sonic the Hedgehog
This came with some bad signs at the initial time, as the blue blur got negative reactions from fans to an extent that the filmmakers had to suspend things and get back to work. During the final release of the movie, it shocked the world and garnered audiences from all over the world because of the voice over work by Ben Schwartz, and the fact that Jim Carrey was casted as Dr. Robotnik. In the movie, Montana sheriff and sonic were working to attack Robotnik and extract Sonic’s iconic rings.
7. Resident Evil
There are so many movies named Resident Evil. At the time of this article, we can count up to 6 of them. So, it’s always a bit difficult to pinpoint one and review it. They include the shabbily done afterlife and the greatly done action packed title that we are referring to here. Revolving around the sprawling lore of Resi, this movie is focused on the action. When you consider the fact that doing a movie on the subject of a slow burn through a mansion in 2020 and captivating the world with it wouldn’t have been easy, you realize what this movie achieved and why it did that. The interpretation of the role of Alice by Milla Jovovich was amazing. This movie seemed to be into Sprawling Universe and Sequels even before Iron Man got to know about the Avengers initiative. So, it’s worth all the accolades.
8. Assassins Creed
This is like the movie that brought video game movies to the spotlight. While those before it were seen as odd and meant for a particular audience, this dispelled all that with its compelling and captivating story about the great struggle between the temple order and the creed.
With great names like Michael K. Williams, Marion Cotillard, and Michael Fassbender, we can say that it is star studded, and this assigns huge legitimacy to the movie as it explores a massive Animus adventure in 15th Century Spain. Considering its low and high points, it’s a great movie to enjoy.
9. Tomb Raider
Imitating the 2013 rebooted game, this movie presents a very vulnerable Lara to the big screen. Though this may not be among the biggest action flicks, it pays a great homage to one of the best games of its time. It tells a direct story of the games, with a Lara that is full of life, and who looks better in London than she looks while raiding tombs in the lost kingdom. Full of stars, it made a lot of difference, even as we expect the sequel.
10. Detective Pikachu
This may be the best video game movie ever. Once it was announced that Deadpool himself- Ryan Reynolds, will be the voiceover man, we knew the Pokémon brand has outdone itself here. It’s about the 21-year-old Tim Goodman that is searching for his missing private investigator father, Henry, and had to do it with Pikachu. Family sentiments, enough jokes for the humor, and a mélange of stars, as directed by Rob Letterman makes it the best.
