Interviews: Director Julia Hart and actor Arinze Kene on ‘I’m Your Woman’

The film hits Prime Video this week.

The 70s are jammed with great thrillers – think The French Connection, Klute, The Getaway for starters – and they’re also the setting for director Julia Hart’s latest, I’m Your Woman.

But the perspective is different. A self-confessed fan of thrillers from the decade, Hart talks in the interview below about how she set out to tell a story from a woman’s viewpoint – and it was all inspired by performances from the likes of Jane Fonda, Tuesday Weld and Diane Keaton.

The woman at the centre of the film is Jean, played by Rachael Brosnahan, who leads a sheltered life, even though she knows her husband’s line of work is decidedly shady. All that changes in the blink of an eye when she’s rushed out of her home by one of his colleagues and has to go into hiding. She’s given an unofficial minder/driver, Cal (Arinze Kene), who helps her move from safe house to safe house, as well as looking after the baby she has with her. And, as she tries to stay ahead of the people looking for her, Jean sets out to discover why she’s lost control of her life.

Hart also talks about working on the script with husband Jordan Horowitz and why the screenplay was in development for a number of years before it became a film. British actor, Arinze Kene, explains why he decided to take a short break from the theatre to make the film and what it was like working with the youngest members of the cast, the babies who played Jean’s son.

I’m Your Woman is on Amazon Prime from Friday, 11 December.
