Interview: Director Kornél Mundruczó and writer Kata Wéber on ‘Pieces Of A Woman’

The film is now streaming on Netflix.

As the awards season glimmers on the horizon, one of the hottest tips for awards glory arrives on Netflix. Pieces Of A Woman charts the devastating effect on a mother and those around her when her baby dies shortly after being born.

PIECES OF A WOMAN: (L to R) Shia LeBeouf as Sean and Vanessa Kirby as Martha

Already a hit at last year’s Venice Film Festival, with Vanessa Kirby taking the Best Actress accolade, it features a 25-minute scene showing Kirby giving birth, a sequence that is staged to look that it has been captured in a single take. And in the interview below, director Kornél Mundruczó discusses the reasons behind his decision to represent a birth on screen in such an intense and physical manner.

Writer Kata Wéber reflects on the challenges that went with writing a script in a foreign language, while Mundruczó recalls working with a cast who spoke different versions of English – Kirby is British, while co-stars Shia LaBeouf and Ellen Burstyn are both American. And the two discuss bringing what is, for them, a very personal story to our screens and their reactions to the possibility of awards recognition.

Pieces Of A Woman is on Netflix now.
