New ‘Face/ Off’ film on the way; Adam Wingard to direct

A planned sequel to the 1997 original.

A new Face/ Off movie is reportedly in the works over at Paramount Pictures. The news is that the movie will in fact be a sequel to the John Woon-helmed 1997 first film, which of course starred Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. The new one is set to be helmed by Adam Wingard, an excellent filmmaker who has Godzilla Vs. Kong in the can ready for release later this year.

1997’s Face/Off revolved around Travolta’s Sean Archer, an FBI agent grieving for his young son who was murdered by the villainous Caster Troy. Archer finally tracks him down but undergoes facial surgery to look like his nemesis in order to find out the whereabouts of a bomb. Of course, Troy also manages to get hold of Archer’s face as well, and all hell breaks loose when he then escapes from custody.

Of course, the film is brilliant, chock-full of Woo’s stylish filmmaking – slow motion aplenty, twin gun shoot outs and doves. Lots of doves.

Wingard is also responsible for 2013’s You’re Next, and his talent in that genre could bring lend itself to the horror/ sci-fi elements seen in the original. He’s re-teaming with collaborator Simon Barrett on the Face/ Off sequel but the main roles are said to be being recast.

Deadline broke the news of the new Face/ Off movie later on Thursday.

Here’s the trailer for Face/ Off. Not seen the film? Track it down this weekend. You’re in for a treat.
