Interview: Adam Egypt Mortimer on subverting superhero conventions with ‘Archenemy’

On digital and DVD from 22nd February.

Adam Egypt Mortimer is a filmmaker whose career we at team THN have been following for years. His first two films Some Kind of Hate and Daniel Isn’t Real have played heavily into the horror genre, whereas film three, Archenemy, plays more into the action arena. Starring Joe Manganiello, Archenemy sees Manganiello play Max Fist, a man who claims to be a hero from another dimension who fell through time and space to Earth, where he no longer has powers. No one believes his stories except for a local teen named Hamster (Skylan Brooks). Together, they take to the streets to wipe out the local drug syndicate and its vicious crime boss known as The Manager.

The change of pace for Mortimer also offers a change of tone and style for the superhero movie. It’s a genre of film that has become a fairly standardised and regimented affair. Mortimer throws the rule book out and connects with, not only the cosmos, but also a grittier and gnarlier world.

With the film offering such a departure from what we’ve become accustomed to, we took the chance to catch up with Adam to discuss the project in more detail.

Archenemy is available on Digital and DVD in the UK from 22nd February 2021.
