On digital formats now is the excellent historical drama Emperor, a great independent film revolving around the life of Shields Green – nicknamed Emperor – who was an outlaw slave in the pre-Civil War South. A man fighting to free his family and bring an end to tyranny, Emperor fights his way north, joining forces with abolitionist John Brown for a daring raid on Harper’s Ferry, helping to alter the course of American history in the process.
We caught up with the actor who plays Shields in the film, Dayo Okeniyi who joined us from his hotel room in Toronto where he is shooting a new project. We spoke about how he prepared for the role, working with director Mark Amin and legendary producer Reginald Hudlin on the project.
