Wes Anderson’s next ‘The French Dispatch’ and more could be set for Cannes 2021 debut

This year’s edition will kick off in July.

We’re hearing that following the announcement of the opening film of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival – movie musical Annette – further titles have been added to the line-up. This year’s festival will be taking place in July rather than the traditional May – due to the Covid-19 pandemic – and trade paper Variety is reporting that Wes Anderson’s new film The French Dispatch has been added to the films to play at the big event.

They also say that Sean Penn’s next film Flag Day is also amongst the new titles. The drama stars Penn with him acting with his daughter Dylan Penn, his son Hopper Penn, as well as Josh Brolin and Miles Teller.

The new Jane Campion film The Power of The Dog with Benedict Cumberbatch and Kristen Dunst; and Paul Schrader’s thriller The Card Counter are a further two titles that may be amongst the movies set to play on the croisette. Official Competition which will reunite Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz may also be featured, as well as Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta, the Tilda Swinton-led Memoria from filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, Asghar Farhadi’s A Hero, and more. See the full list of potentials at the end of the link above.

Spike Lee will preside over the competition jury this year, assuming the role he was set to take at the cancelled Cannes 2020. This year’s festival is scheduled to run from 6-17th July.

The official selection will be announced at the end of May.
