Interview: Max Minghella on incoming, highly anticipated suspense thriller, ‘Spiral: From The Book Of Saw’

Max Minghella discusses his latest film., the ninth in the Saw franchise, Spiral.

Max Minghella is known for his work on The Handmaid’s Tale, but from the 17th May he can be found in cinemas alongside Chris Rock in new movie Spiral: From the Book of Saw. In Spiral he plays rookie detective William Schenk who gets partnered with Chris Rock’s Detective Zeke Banks. Schenk arrives on the scene just as a new iteration of the Jigsaw killer raises their head. This new Jigsaw has a rather different agenda to that of John Kramer and his disciples. Instead of trapping addicts, criminal elements, and all-round questionably moral people from all walks of life, this one’s victims all have one thing in common – they are part of the police force.

There’s a great odd couple vibe to Banks and Schenk, Spiral playing as a blend of Seven and Lethal Weapon with the usual Saw components scattered into the mix. It’s an interesting slant of the established series tropes and Minghella and Rock play well off of one another. As their dynamic develops, the pair find themselves drawn further and further into Jigsaw’s web. Can they stop this copycat before their legacy can begin?

The good news is that you won’t have long to find out as Spiral: From the Book of Saw arrives on the big screen as part of the opening line-up of cinemas across the UK. Cinemas have been closed for several months due to the pandemic and people are chomping at the bit to get back into those darkened screens; Spiral could be in for a smash box-office. Before those hallowed doors open once more, you can watch our spoiler-free chat with Minghella during which we discuss his love of Saw II, what drew him to play Schenk, and which The Handmaid’s Tale character is most deserving of winding up in one of Jigsaw’s traps.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw arrives in cinemas across the UK from Monday 17th May.
