‘Spencer’ starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana set for Venice Film Festival

Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall and Sean Harris are also amongst the cast.

According to Variety, Spencer, the Princess Diana film led by Kristen Stewart, is set to land at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The trade reports the news that Pablo Larraín’s drama will feature at the September festival marking its world premiere at the prestigious event.

The film is written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) and is set during one Christmas weekend when the late princess decided to leave her then-husband, Prince Charles.

The official synopsis is as follows:

December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.

The film stars Stewart as Diana, with Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner, The Party), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water, Paddington) and Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Prometheus) amongst the cast.

This year’s Venice Film Festival starts on 1st September where Spencer is confirmed to be competing as part of the official competition.
