Interview: Writer/director Uberto Pasolini and actor James Norton on the heartbreaking ‘Nowhere Special’

In cinemas from Friday.

It’s a film that started with a story in a local newspaper, about a single father trying to find a new family for his young son. It caught the eye of the director, Uberto Pasolini, and the result is Nowhere Special, released this Friday.

John (James Norton) has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He and his son, Michael (Daniel Lamont) are inseparable and the boy is too young to understand that they will soon be parted. Wracked with guilt about what he’s doing, John searches desperately to find the loving home his son needs while his own condition deteriorates.

The film is Pasolini’s first since Still Life in 2013 and the director/writer explains his love of smaller, more intimate films and the precision that went into scenes that appear spontaneous on screen. Both he and Norton talk about working with young Daniel Lamont, who was just four when the film was shot, and the truth he bought to the role.

And Norton also shows off his talent for mouth trumpeting!

Nowhere Special is in cinemas from 16 July.
