On 26th August Cineworld Leicester Square will once more open its doors to the Hellish delights that Arrow Video FrightFest has to offer. The annual event will showcase a plethora of films that all embrace the darker heart of cinema. This doesn’t mean that every film will be a bloodbath, or full or darkness, some just flirt with the darkness or, as in the case of Are We Monsters, features an iconic movie monster.
Written and directed by Seb Cox, Are We Monsters is a werewolf film like no other. The story follows Maya (Charlotte Olivia), a young female werewolf who teams up with a folklore enthusiast, Luke (Jathis Sivanesan), and two werewolf hunters, Connor (Stefan Chanyaem) and Everett (John Black), to understand her werewolf history and tame the monster within. As a blood moon draws closer and the threat of a powerful transformation looms, time is running out before the consequences become deadly.
Are We Monsters will screen at Arrow Video FrightFest as part of the First Blood programming. The strand, which takes over the Discovery screens for the entirety of the Saturday’s schedule, highlights some of the most fresh and exciting filmmakers. The film that Seb Cox has created fits perfectly into the ideals of the First Blood initiative, offering an eye-opening new perspective on one of the original movie monsters. Yes, Are We Monsters features werewolves (whose designs are exceptionally unique), but it aligns itself more as a coming of age story set within a fantasy backdrop. Emotionally charged and beautifully shot across a mixture of animation and live-action, this is one very special little number.
In advance of Are We Monsters we sat down with Seb to find out more about the journey from script to screen, and just what attendees can expect when they settle down to watch the film.
Are We Monsters will receive its world premiere at Arrow Video FrightFest on Saturday 28th August 2021. Tickets for the screening can be purchased on the FrightFest website.
