Last year Blumhouse and Amazon treated horror fans to a collection of specially made genre films that formed part of their Welcome to the Blumhouse series. This year they have once more cooked up some brilliant new stories, whilst at the same time working with some great new horror-loving filmmaking talent. The collection of four films will be released on Amazon in two batches this October. This first pair arrives on Friday 1st October, with the final two launching the following Friday 8th October.
One of the two films to kick off this spooky season’s Welcome to the Blumhouse is Black as Night. Written by Sherman Payne and directed by Maritte Lee Go, Black as Night stars Asjha Cooper as Shawna, a teenage girl whose summer plans go awry when she discovers vampires are nesting in her home of New Orleans. After accidentally uncovering the vampire’s plot, Shawna decides to take matters into her own hands to protect the home that she loves so much. Along the way she finds her own inner confidence and proves to be a rather talented vampire slayer. On the surface Black as Night presents itself as a fun and hip teen film, a modern spin on something similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but it also deals with a ton of socially important issues. Director Maritte Lee Go explores slavery, racisim, addiction, and colorism amongst others, giving a voice to those that so often get forgotten about. It also boasts a kick-ass female character, brought to life by a wonderful performance by Asjha Cooper.
Ahead of the Amazon launch we sat down with both Maritte Lee Go and lead Asjha Cooper to find out why they both felt so passionate about making this movie together.
Black as Night arrives on Amazon Prime on 1st October 2021.
