HBO has bagged Ben Foster boxing drama ‘The Survivor’ that premiered at TIFF

Barry Levinson directs.

Here’s some brief acquisition news as it is for a film that I managed to catch at last month’s TIFF and is very much worthy of mention. The Barry Levinson-directed and Ben Foster-starring The Survivor has been snapped up to premiere on HBO Stateside.

I really dug this movie though didn’t actually get around to reviewing for the site. Foster plays a prize fighter and Auschwitz survivor in this superb true story about Harry Haft who continues his boxing career after leaving the concentration camp and fleeing to America.

Now, there’s no mention as to whether this will be going to HBO or HBO Max (we’re presuming the former) or indeed where it will end up overseas, but if it does pop up on a streaming or cable service near you, do give it a chance as it is a remarkable little movie. It’s worth seeing for the Foster performance in itself – the actor lost a huge amount of weight for the Auschwitz scenes – and is another glowing example of why he is one of the best actors of his generation.

Here’s a Q+A from TIFF with Levinson and Foster talking about the movie.
