For tech peeps, here’s an interesting video/ podcast with Denis Villeneuve and his sound team talking about their latest collaborative effort, Dune. This chat was done for the Dolby Institute podcast and features Villeneuve talking about his latest film, along with his team of sound guys, Mark Mangini, Theo Green, and Ron Bartlett.

The chat runs for nearly an hour and, if you’ve seen the film, is well worth your time to check it out. The filmmaker talks about bringing the film to screen, specifically about the superb sound design of the epic.
A snippet from the great man himself.
“”[A]t the end of the day, you’re not mixing sound, you’re mixing an image. It’s storytelling. And everything that pulls you away from the screen is bad for me. But with the sound of Atmos, what I like is that I just have the impression that I’m diving INTO the image.””
The whole podcast was filmed and is up on YouTube on the official Dolby page.
Also, if you’re interesting in going further with the post-production process on one of the year’s biggest films, then we would also recommend that you check out the Art of the Cut episode with the film’s editor, Joe Walker. This one is also super-detailed and goes into Walker’s process in editing the feature.
Check out both below.
