New release Monday; ‘Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City’, ‘Spencer’ and more hit the physical formats

It’s that time of the week again where we go through the new home entertainment releases arriving on the physical formats. This week sees the release of potential Oscar magnet, Spencer, as well as the new Resident Evil movie, ‘Welcome To Racoon City’.

Spencer

We kick things off this week with Spencer, the Princess Diana film led by Kirsten Stewart. I caught this one recently on premium VOD and rather likes it. Set over three days one Christmas, Pablo Larraín’s stunning film, scripted by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight, features a wonderful lead performance from Stewart, as well as excellent support from the likes of Timothy Spall, Sean Harris and Sally Hawkins.

The marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. But this year, things will be profoundly different. SPENCER is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days.

Our review of Spencer from Venice.

This Blu-ray and DVD release seems very light on bonus materials, though, with just a ‘making of’ on the disc. A little disappointing, but this is a great movie and one of the best from the latter half of 2021 and more than worthy of the cover price.

Resident Evil: Welcome To Racoon City

The latest adaptation of the video game series was met with mixed reviews and I’m personally not a huge fan of the films that proceeded it, though I’m willing to give this one a go as I am a bit of a fan of the film’s director, Johannes Roberts.

There are a few more bonus bits on this one with the following listed amongst the special features:

  • Replicating the DNA
  • Cops, Corpses and Chaos
  • Zombies, Lickers and the Horrors of Resident Evil

We interviewed Roberts when the film was release, which you can check out in the player below.

Marvel Studios Eternals

I am aware that this one is playing on Disney+ but non-subscribers and Marvel Studios completists can get hold of the movie on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD from this weeks. Again, this one received mixed reviews but apparently, after multiple viewings, the experience of ‘Eternals’ improves, so I’m willing to give this one a go.

A brilliant ensemble stars in this enthralling film from Marvel Studios. ETERNALS follows a group of ancient heroes from beyond the stars who have protected humanity since the dawn of our existence. When Deviants — monstrous creatures who were thought gone forever — mysteriously reappear, the Eternals return, hoping to save humanity once again.

Bonus stuff includes audio commentary, deleted scenes, gag reel and more.

Shane

This documentary about legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne is released on DVD and Blu-ray but is also available on streaming services.

This compelling documentary spent countless hours interviewing Shane, his peers, his friends, sports psychologists, commentators, his family, and his ex-wife. It paints a picture of a man driven by the demons of failure and blessed to have the skill and determination to master one of the hardest skills in sport – wrist-spin bowling – an unnatural and highly precise technique that is a beauty to behold when it is done correctly, and a nightmare when it goes wrong. It is a rare insight into the man they simply call “Warnie”.

The only listed extra on this one is a trailer.

Also released: Don’t Go In The House (1980), Waynes World and Wayne’s World 2, Catwoman: Hunted.
