With the continued change in attitudes, behaviours and consumer demands, traditional home entertainment has been impacted in a highly negative way over the past decade or so.
Indeed, the days of gathering all around the TV to watch certain programs live seems to have become a memory of the past for many due to the alternative options we have available to us, whilst even the trusted radio and traditional game consoles have even been impacted negatively because of the technology that has been made available in the modern era.
There is no doubt that it can be argued that entertainment is better than ever presently, however the fact that traditional home entertainment has declined because of the improvements that have been made is also undeniable.
Let’s look at the various forms that have experienced a decline in recent memory and why this may have happened:
Games consoles
Traditional games consoles used to be everything for kids in the past as many would come home from school, throw their bags on the floor, forget the homework that they needed to complete and play their favourite video games as soon as they walked through the door.
Indeed, whilst there are a few that may still do that, the rise of online games has perhaps changed the way we are all playing games, including the adult gaming population. Many are now using handheld devices such as smartphones in order to play their favourite games, including those who use casinos online in the UK as they enjoy a top gaming experience.
Portable gadgets have allowed online games to be accessible from anywhere an internet connection can be obtained, thus ultimately changing the way games are played.
Conventional TV has died as streaming takes over
Before we were able to take advantage of on-demand streaming services such as Netflix or Prime Video, we would have to sit around the TV and watch the programme we had wanted to see live when it was broadcasted, otherwise there was a very good chance that we would miss it and either, have to wait an extremely long time for it to be repeated or completely miss it forever.
However, streaming services have since made that a thing of the past as we are now provided with the convenience to be able to watch what we want, whenever we want. We can simply log on to one of the many streaming platforms that have been created and choose our favourite titles and enjoy them in our own time.
DVDs have reduced the need for people heading to the cinema
The cinema was always an experience and a day out for many who used to attend, as they would be able to get to watch one of the latest box-office blockbusters on an enormous screen and enjoy a sound experience unlike any other.
Admittedly, some will have stopped going as the whole experience appeared to be getting more and more expensive with each viewing, however the introduction of DVDs will have also had an impact on attendance numbers, too.
Viewers can wait just a few months these days as DVDs are being released a lot quicker than they once were, thus allowing people to pay a fraction of the price and enjoy the movie in the comfort of their own home, as many times as they want.
Radio has become less popular
The radio used to be one of the most popular forms of entertainment for many, however this has certainly declined in recent years with the emergence of music streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc.) as well as the rise of podcasts.
People are able to listen to what they want whenever they want these days, therefore not having to rely on listening to the radio in order to hear the latest news or their favourite tracks from the biggest artists like we used to.
