After an extensive career as an animator, Pierre Perifel has moved over to the director’s chair and his debut feature, The Bad Guys, lands in cinemas this week.
Based on the comic books by Aaron Blabey, it follows the villains of the title as they undertake their most audacious heist and, despite years of happily evading the police, find themselves looking disaster in the face. They’ve two choices – a long prison sentence or turning themselves into The Good Guys. Sounds easy but breaking the habits of a lifetime are never straightforward, and it all gets complicated when they discover a real villain hiding in plain sight.
With franchises such as Kung Fu Panda behind him, Perifel felt it was time to take on the challenge of directing but, while making The Bad Guys, couldn’t resist the temptation of being just a little hands on and getting involved in the animation. How he essentially “autographed” the film is revealed in the interview below.
He also talks about the movies which inspired the look of the film – from 70s heist movies onwards – and why adults will love it just as much as children will. And maybe a little bit more.
