Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear on the many characters in ‘Men’

Men has been making waves ever since that first trailer landed three months ago. That it’s from Alex Garland would usually be reason enough, but what got everybody talking was the number of characters all being played by one single actor. Rory Kinnear.

In Garland’s psychological horror, which is also rooted in pagan folklore, Jessie Buckley plays Harper who, after the sudden death of her ex-husband, retreats to the Cotswold countryside in search of peace and emotional healing. But the beautiful setting hides a less comforting secret. Something or somebody from the woods appears to be stalking her and not all of the locals are especially welcoming. What starts as a feeling of dread turns into a nightmare, one that feeds on her guilt and even more profound fears.

In the exclusive interview below the two actors discuss what they look for when considering a new role – Buckley admits she likes “doing odd things” – and Kinnear talks specifically about the demands of playing eight different roles. They also describe the reactions from the audience at the film’s first screening in New York – and somehow a certain 007 finds his way into the conversation …..

‘Men’ is released in cinemas on 1 June 2022.
