Road to FrightFest 2022: Director Will Higo discusses First Blood entry ’The Group’

Each year Arrow Video FrightFest dedicates a full day of one of its Discovery Screens to the First Blood strand. Taking place on Saturday, this programming shines a spotlight on a handful of some of the newest and brightest films on the genre scene. This year’s selection will screen at The Prince Charles cinema on Saturday 27th August and will include Will Higo’s The Group.

After an overdose, heroin addict Kara (Evangelina Burton) returns to the support group she abandoned for one last chance to make things right. But not everyone can forgive and forget… When a new member pulls out a gun, taking the group hostage, they are quickly thrown into a fight for their lives. The rules have changed. He wants them to reveal the sins that brought them here and in turn, if he finds them deserving of his mercy, he’ll let them leave. Through the cycle of confession and betrayal, the group begins to fracture. Can they overcome their differences long enough to escape?

As with others on the First Blood line-up, The Group marks writer and director Will Higo’s feature debut. The Group is a performance-driven intense thriller that analyses addiction; It not only explores those who battle addictions, but also how it impacts all others around them. Stripped back and intimate, The Group draws in the viewer and will leave them with their heart in their mouths.

In the lead-up to the World Premiere at FrightFest, THN spoke with Higo to find out more about the production process, what genre films excite him, hiding little Easter eggs in the film, and why the FrightFest family should seek The Group out.

The Group screens at Arrow Video FrightFest on Saturday 27th August at 1pm. Tickets for The Group  can be purchased by heading to the FrightFest website here.
