Interview: We speak with some of the crew of ’V/H/S/99’ ahead of its Shudder debut

In 2012 the world was introduced to the first V/H/S film. An anthology of horror, the movie was an instant hit. In the ten years that have passed since there have been four sequels, the most recent of which, V/H/S/99, is about to arrive on Shudder.

V/H/S/99

If the title didn’t give it away, V/H/S/99 features several stories all set in the year 1999. For those of us old enough to have lived through that period, the film presents a throwback to strange times. As the year reached its conclusion, attention turned to the uncertainty of what would happen when the new millennium arrived. There was the whole Y2K panic where many believed that technology would all crumble at the stroke of midnight. It really was a bizarre experience and provides fertile ground for the latest V/H/S filmmakers.

The franchise is all about celebrating new and existing talent, and V/H/S/99 is no exception. This time around, the roster of talent features Tragedy Girls director Tyler MacIntyre, Maggie Levin, musician-turned-director, Flying Lotus, and Johannes Roberts of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and 47 Metres Down fame. V/H/S/99 also includes the latest offering from Vanessa and Joseph Winter whose debut feature, Deadstream, is currently taking Shudder by storm. It’s an eclectic mix of talent and the segments reflect this, creating a rollercoaster of fun, frights, and nausea.

Ahead of the Shudder launch, THN spoke with directors Tyler MacIntyre, Vanessa Winter, and Joseph Winter, as well as producer Scott Goldbloom. During our discussion we reminisced about the year 1999, spoke of the power of practical effects, and just what Hell might look like.

V/H/S/99 arrives exclusively on Shudder from Thursday 20th October.
