Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival awards winners announced; ‘Driving Mum’ wins top gong

The winners of the 2022 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, which wrapped up at the weekend, have been announced. Icelandic film Driving Mum wins the Official Selection Competition, while the best First Feature film award went to The Land Within from Switzerland/Kosovo.

Elsewhere, Lithuanian film Poet won the Baltic Competition prize, the winner of the Rebels with a Cause Competition was Rebelión from Colombia/Argentina, while Critics’ Picks Competition went to About Us But Not About Us from the Philippines. The DDA Spotlight Award went to Sarah Polley and Ali Abbasi.

Speaking of Driving Mum, the jury said in a statement:  “During this last week we have seen a wide, wildly different range of films. Among them we found one, which charmed us all with its transparent, simple but bold film language, with its graceful sense of humour, with its unpretentious way of speaking about burning questions of personal life. A film which tells us that it is never too late.”

Best cinematography – Adrian Teijido, River Of Desire
Best script – Shahar Rozen, Dudu Busi, DUCKS – An Urban Legend
Best actor – Gurban Ismailov, Cold As Marble
Best actress – Antonia Zegers, The Punishment
Best original score – Tonu Korvits, Driving Mum
Best production design – Michael Schindlmeier, Servus Papa, See You In Hell
