Interview: Writer and Director Corey Deshon discusses his exceptional debut ‘Daughter’

Corey Deshon’s Daughter was one of our favourite films to screen at last year’s Arrow Video FrightFest. In our review (which you can read in full here) we called Daughter “a mesmerising and beautifully dangerous cinematic experience.” We were blown away by how incredibly layered and intricately planned the film was, especially with it being Deshon’s first feature film. The work of the young director is nothing short of exceptional;  Daughter demonstrates an almost genius level of technical skill and visual flourishes. Everything put on screen has meaning and this is a movie that you could spend months peeling back and exploring.

Daughter stars Casper Van Dien, Vivien Ngô, Elyse Dinh and Ian Alexander, and tells the story of a young woman who is inducted into a bizarre family as their new surrogate daughter. Told across several chapters, Daughter is a taunt indie thriller that keeps more secrets than it reveals. It also allows Casper Van Dien to showcase a new side to his acting abilities. Better known as Starship Troopers’ Johnny Rico, Van Dien has had an excellent career within the action and science-fiction genre. In Daughter he gets to play with a completely different kind of character in a new type of film for the star. His performance is incredible and has garnered high praise across the board.

For those that missed the film at FrightFest, Daughter arrived on digital platforms from Monday 20th February. Ahead of the release we spoke with Corey a little more about the construction and thought-process behind his remarkable debut feature. The discussion covers bringing the outside in, telling a story in sections, and having fun subverting Casper Van Dien’s public persona.

Daughter will be available to own or rent on Digital HD in the UK & Ireland from February 20 via AppleTV, Amazon, Sky Store, Virgin Media and Google Play.
