Hang On! Sylvester Stallone to return for ‘Cliffhanger 2’

Sylvester Stallone is set to return for a sequel to Cliffhanger some 30 years after the release of the original movie. Ric Roman Waugh, the director of Greenland and Angel Has Fallen will direct ‘Cliffhanger 2’ which will see Sly reprise his role of search and rescue mountain climber Gabe Walker. I am so up for this.

Mark Bianculli (Hunters) wrote the screenplay for the new movie.

The 1993 original premiered at the Cannes film festival and revolved around Walker who went after a bunch of stranded hikers in the Rocky Mountains. However, it turns out that those hikers were, in fact, hardened criminals trying to recover $100 million in missing loot after their plane crashes. Michael Rooker, John Lithgow, and Craig Fairbrass were also among the cast.

It is thought that the sequel will take place in the Italian Alps.

The trades say that Stallone’s Walker isn’t the only main protagonist with another lead currently being sought.

Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film and Rocket Science are behind the production, producing with Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions.

Speaking in a statement, Waugh said:

Growing up with the biggest action films of the ’80s and ’90s, working on many of them myself, ‘Cliffhanger’ was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true. It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

More as it comes in. Here’s the trailer for the first movie which is well worth seeking out if you haven’t seen it.
