Interview: Mark Dacascos looks back on ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf’

In 2001, Christophe Gans’ Brotherhood of the Wolf was released, and quickly became a cult marvel. Based on a real-life series of killings that took place during 18th century France, the film captured the imagination of audiences with its genre-defying blend of action, horror and historical epic. Now over twenty years old, Studiocanal has given Brotherhood of the Wolf a loving restoration for a brand new 4K UHD release. If you are unfamiliar with Gans’ hidden gem, now is the perfect time to experience it.

During the reign of Louis XV, an isolated district of south-central France is haunted by the “Beast of Gévaudan”, which has savagely killed over 100 people, mostly women and children. As panic sweeps across the region, the King sends his finest military minds, the scientist and adventurer Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) and his martial-arts-trained Iroquois blood brother, Mani (Mark Dacascos), to flush out the Beast and kill it…

The turn of the millennium movie had a stunning international ensemble, including Samuel Le Bihan, Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassell, Jérémie Renier, and Mark Dacascos. Ahead of the new restoration release, THN spoke with one of these exceptionally talented actors, Mark Dacascos. Prior to Brotherhood of the Wolf, Dacascos was best known for playing Eric Draven in television series, The Crow: Stairway to Heaven, but his turn as Mani garnered a lot of attention. Since then, Dacascos’ career has gone from strength to strength with the actor having appeared in Cradle 2 the Grave, Agents of Shield, and more recently, John Wick 3: Parabellum.

With a career that spans stunt work, martial arts, acting, directing, a stint on Dancing with the Stars, and a long-term gig as Iron Chef America’s Chairman, there’s little in the industry that Dacascos hasn’t experienced. Of his projects though, Brotherhood of the Wolf remains a favourite, his passion is evident even all these years later throughout our conversation. Find out what makes Brotherhood of the Wolf so special for him, as well the extra levels of commitment he went to in order to prepare to be Mani, and how a fun idea for his John Wick 3 character of Zero ended up sticking.

Brotherhood of the Wolf arrives on 4K UHD, Blu-Ray and DVD from Monday 15th May 2023.
