Over the weekend, I was surfing YouTube – if that’s a thing – and came across this fantastic video featuring The Hangover trilogy, Due Date and specifically Joker cinematographer Lawrence Sher talking in great length about that last movie. The video comes to the streaming platform courtesy of Matti Haapoja, a YouTuber with a considerable following, and a keen eye for focusing on technology used in big Hollywood movies.
As part of a series where filmmakers talk about working on specific projects, Sher teases the new Joker movie, Joker: Folie à Deux, even bringing out what looks like a photo book at one point – though it is heavily pixelated. Sher talks about which camera he used on the film, the lenses, too, as well as his fave shots from the final movie itself. He talks about his product, Shotdeck, a searchable cinematic image database that has become a much-called-upon tool with filmmakers.
The near our-long video is a must for fans of the art of cinema photography and movie in general. When I watched it, I had to stay with it until the very end. Utterly compelling, and Sher is a very likable dude, too.
