Interview: Lee Cronin on creating ‘Evil Dead Rise’

In 1981 Sam Raimi introduced the horror world to the evil phenomena that are Deadites, with his debut feature, Evil Dead. The creatures, summoned from the Book of the Dead, have possessed hapless victim after victim throughout the duration of the Evil Dead series and earlier this year, a new crop of victims were lined-up in Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise was an immediate success with fans of the franchise, Cronin expertly paying homage to Raimi’s original movies, but still leaving space for his own innovations. One such addition was a location shake-up. Up until Evil Dead Rise the franchise has been tightly tied to the ‘cabin in the woods’ setting. Cronin changed tact and transported viewers from a remote rural locale to the isolation and desolation of a decaying high-rise building. The director also shifted focus from a group of friends in peril to a family in danger, the new dynamic rejuvenating the series.

Primarily set over the course of one night, Evil Dead Rise tells the twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons. They are thrust into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

After wowing cinema audiences earlier this year, Evil Dead Rise arrives on digital download from 14th July, and on UHD, Blu-ray and DVD. Ahead of the release THN were able to speak with the mastermind behind the project, Lee Cronin, to get a further understanding of Evil Dead Rise’s creation, the importance of family, and restoring the popularity of the title card…

Evil Dead Rise will be available on digital download from 14th July, and available to buy on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD, including a limited special edition SteelBook, from 17th July.
