Last October, during FrightFest, Halloween THN first laid eyes on the cheesy gorefest that is Mad Heidi. A crowdfunded movie, Mad Heidi was made to be seen with as many people as possible. It’s a healthy mixture of comedy, satire, gross out gore and ooey-gooey cheese. It stars newcomer Alice Lucy as a very different iteration of the iconic Heidi character from the story books. As the titular ‘Mad Heidi’, Lucy has to overthrow a cheese-mad dictator, played by Starship Troopers legend, Casper Van Dien. Read on for the full synopsis and all Mad Heidi’s insanity.
This wicked odyssey of blood and cheese puts a new spin on the classic tale of “Heidi,” finding our heroine (Alice Lucy) all grown-up and living an idyllic life in the Swiss Alps with her beloved grandfather (David Schofield). She resides far above an increasingly-dystopian landscape presided over by Our Very Swiss Leader (Casper Van Dien) – a ruthless dictator bent on world domination through dairy. When her goat-herding lover (Kel Matsena) is brutally murdered by government thugs for distributing illegal cheese, Heidi embarks on a wild quest for vengeance that will bring her toe-to-toe against fierce female prison inmates, cheese-fueled Swiss super-soldiers, ninja nuns, and more, as she fights to take down the tyrannical regime and restore freedom to Switzerland.
Our review called Mad Heidi “a film made for genre audiences” and several months on that is a sentiment that we stand by. Mad Heidi is such a fun ride and its energy is infectious, making it an instant cult hit. Ahead of Mad Heidi‘s official launch in the US, THN sat down with both Casper Van Dien and Alice Lucy to find out as much as we could about this cult gem.
