Interview: The Adams Family discuss ‘Where the Devil Roams’

They say that a family that plays together stays together. The Adams Family (John Adams, Lulu Adams, Toby Poser and Zelda Adams) have gone one step further using their play time to create art together. The group works as a cohesive unit to create crowd-pleasing films time and time again. We at THN have been big fans of the Adams Family since we first saw their film, The Deeper You Dig. Their last film, Hellbender, is also one of our favourite films of the last few years; their latest creation, Where the Devil Roams, is pretty awesome too. An Adams Family production is never straightforward, but Where the Devil Roams might be their most abstract project yet.

In the dregs of Depression Era America, a family of performers travels a cold, dying carnival circuit. Seven (John Adams) has the brains, Maggie (Tobey Poser) the brawn, and daughter Eve (Zelda Adams) is their quiet dark angel. Eve sings for their supper, but when her parents fall to pieces, their act really comes together.

THN caught Where the Devil Roams during its premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival. Our review called it ‘a heady maelstrom of violence and wry humour’, and applauded both the visuals and soundtrack. The latter was created by the family band – Hellbender. During their hectic Fantasia schedule the foursome freed up some time to speak to press and THN were lucky to be included in their line-up.

The family were in exceptionally high spirits when we spoke to them, and just hours after our conversation, the film took home the Fantasia award for best cinematography. Over the course of our time together we discussed the pressure of following two perfect movies, expanding their cast of characters, bringing Hellbender onto the soundtrack, and their circle of trust. Watch the interview in its entirety below:

Where the Devil Roams will screen in the UK at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest. Where the Devil Roams will be released in the US via Tubi later this year.
