Someone once said, “Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend never had a dog”. Never has a truer word been spoken. The bond between humans and dogs is undeniable – and it is deeper than anyone can explain. They are our companions, our best friends – and always there by our side, through good and bad.
It therefore is no surprise that they have been the subject of some of the best and most touching movies in cinematic history. There are too many to mention, in fact. But here are some of my very favourites…
Marley & Me
Probably the most famous recent dog movie. This is a heartwarming and heartbreaking 2008 comedy-drama film starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. Based on a true story and a best-selling book, it follows a couple as they navigate the ups and downs of life with their mischievous but lovable rogue Labrador Retriever, Marley.
The film beautifully portrays the challenges and joys of being a dog parent, ultimately showcasing the deep bond that forms between humans and their furry companions. Through Marley’s antics and unwavering loyalty, it highlights the enduring power of love and the life lessons that our beloved dogs can teach us. And if you don’t cry at the end, you have no soul!
Dalkeith
If you’re someone who likes a flutter on the greyhound odds, then this may be worth a watch. This is a lesser-known film that is still worth a mention. The story unfolds at Dalkeith Residential Home, where the residents lead monotonous lives, merely waiting for the days to pass.
However, their outlook changes dramatically when the caring staff acquires a greyhound, affectionately named Dalkeith after their home. To everyone’s astonishment, Dalkeith the greyhound possesses extraordinary speed and is soon entered into greyhound races. As he does so, the residents find a renewed sense of purpose as they enthusiastically wager on her races, injecting some well-needed excitement and joy into their days.
However, their newfound happiness is short-lived when the home’s board of trustees catches wind of the betting activities, thanks to a disgruntled resident’s daughter. Heavy-handedly, they quash the residents’ source of amusement. Life takes a darker turn as boredom and despair set in once again.
Hope rekindles when a mysterious and aloof pensioner reveals his past life as a high-profile barrister. He decides to challenge the board’s decision in court, potentially restoring the residents’ zest for life and bringing justice to Dalkeith Residential Home.
Hachi: A Dog’s Tale
A story that once seen, can never be rewatched. This is a heart wrenching drama film directed by Lasse Hallström based on the real-life account of Hachiko, an Akita dog in Japan known for his remarkable loyalty. The film follows the bond between Hachi and his owner, a college professor, played by Richard Gere. After the professor dies unexpectedly whilst at work one day, Hachi continues to wait at the train station every day for his beloved owner’s return, touching the lives of those who encounter him.
The movie beautifully explores themes of love, devotion, and the enduring connection between humans and their loyal canine companions. It’s a touching tribute to Hachiko’s… and every dog’s remarkable loyalty.
Lassie
Lassie is a timeless tale of loyalty and adventure, brought to life in a variety of films, TV series and books that all follow her adventures.
The stories all revolve around Lassie, a Rough Collie, and her heroic journeys to protect and assist her human companions. The character of Lassie has become an iconic symbol of canine devotion and courage. Throughout the years, her fun adventures have captured the hearts of audiences – with the unwavering bond between humans and their four-legged friends. Whether saving lives, navigating treacherous terrain – or simply offering comfort and friendship, Lassie embodies all of the best qualities of dogs and will always be a beloved movie star.
Old Yeller
Is a classic heartbreaking 1957 Disney film based on Fred Gipson’s novel. Set in the American frontier, it tells the touching story of a young boy named Travis and his bond with a beautifully courageous Yellow Labrador… Old Yeller. Their adventures, including facing a rabid wolf, test their friendship and courage. This film truly highlights the loyalty, bravery, and sacrifices dogs make for those they love.
The Art of Racing in the Rain
In true dog-movie style, this is another tear-jerker film. The 2019 film is narrated from the perspective of a dog named Enzo, named after Enzo Ferrari, voiced by Kevin Costner. He tells us the story of his life with his owner, a race car driver. Through his eyes, we get to see his views on love, family – and the pursuit of dreams. It offers a unique and touching portrayal of the human-canine bond, as well as the challenges and triumphs that come with it, making it a heartfelt and memorable cinematic experience.
There are plenty more to mention – Homeward Bound, Turner and Hooch, Eight Below – and many more – all that give us a taste of exactly why dogs really are man’s… and woman’s best friend.
