’28 Years Later’ film will reunite Danny Boyle and Alex Garland

The film is just the first in a potential new trilogy of films.

Some 24 years after the debut of the superb post-apocalyptic zombie film 28 Days Later, and 16 years after the last film, 28 Weeks Later, a third film, 28 Years Later is in the works with Danny Boyle directing and Alex Garland scripting. The 28 Years Later film is said to being packaged and then shopped to potential steamers and studios for distribution. Can’t see that this will be a hard sell as the first film was hugely popular and made a big profit.

It looks like this is the start of a new trilogy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The word is that Boyle is in line to helm the first movie with the hope for two more to follow presumably if this one is a success.

28 Years later film

Remember 28 Days Later? The film saw Cillian Murphy waking in a hospital in London only to find that the entire population seemed to have been wiped out. There were those iconic scenes on the streets of London, including Westminster Bridge, one of the busiest in the capital, completely empty. Boyle filmed those scenes in the early hours of the morning, obviously with just a small window to capture the shots seen in the film. It was a film that would kick-start the zombie genre trend in the years that followed. It tipped the genre on its head with these zombies able to run at break-neck speed.

Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson and Christopher Eccleston were also among the cast of the film.

No word on casting at this early stage, though.

The 28 Years Later film will reportedly have a budget in the $75 million range with the planned sequels also commanding similar.

Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice will serve as producers on the new film.
