Interview: Paul Wesley, Jackie Cruz & Bo Mirhosseni discuss ‘History of Evil’

This week Shudder releases the fantastic taut chiller, History of Evil. The film, a first time feature from writer and director Bo Mirhosseni, will arrive on Shudder from 23rd February. History of Evil stars The Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley and Orange is the New Black’s Jackie Cruz as two-thirds of a family who become changed after arriving at a safe house with a dark past.

In the near future, war and corruption have plagued America and turned it into a theocratic police state. Against the oppression, ordinary citizens have formed a group called The Resistance. One such member, Alegre Dyer (Jackie Cruz), breaks out of political prison and reunites with her husband Ron (Paul Wesley) and daughter Daria (Murphee Bloom). On the run from the militia, the family takes shelter in a remote safe house. But their journey is far from over, as the house’s dark past begins to eat away at Ron, and his earnest desire to keep his family safe is overtaken by something much more sinister.

History of Evil works as a loving and modern riff on The Shining, making it a must-see for fans of the classic horror. Inspired by aspects from the journey of Bo Mirhosseni’s parents, History of Evil weaves real-life horror around the supernatural elements, creating a film that is uncomfortable to watch on many levels. The intimate and claustrophobic story is brought to life beautifully by both Wesley and Cruz, offering viewers the chance to see the actors in ways they have not before.

Ahead of the film’s arrival on Shudder, THN were granted time to speak with the trio of Mirhosseni, Wesley, and Cruz to delve deeper into History of Evil. Watch the video below to find out how the film came together, the impact of its eerie resonance to current society, and exactly why History of Evil should be added to your Shudder watchlist.

History of Evil arrives on Shudder from Friday 23rd February 2024.
