We’re hearing through the trade newspaper Variety that a new Popeye movie is in the works. The new feature will be live-action and will be the first one on the big screen since the 1980s. The comic strip on which that movie and the new one will be based dates back to the 1920s.
Chernin Entertainment and King Features are behind the new movie with a studio partner reportedly being sought.
Popeye, the muscle spinach-eating character was portrayed by the late, great Robin Williams in Robert Altman’s 1980 movie.
Michael Caleo (Sexy Beast, The Sopranos) is writing the screenplay for the new movie, according to the trade, with the film being envisioned as a big-budget affair.
